E-Bike News: CPSC Calls on Manufacturers to Produce Micromobility Devices that Comply With Relevant
The world is rapidly moving towards sustainable and convenient modes of transportation, and micro-mobility products such as e-scooters, hoverboards, e-bicycles, and e-unicycles have become increasingly popular. However, safety has been a major concern for these devices, with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reporting at least 208 micro-mobility fire or overheating incidents from 39 states and 19 fatalities from January 1, 2021, to November 28, 2022. Additionally, the CPSC received reports of 22 hospital-treated injuries, with 12 involving electric scooters and 10 involving electric bicycles.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently called for a review of e-scooters, self-balancing scooters (also known as hoverboards), e-bicycles, and e-unicycles to ensure compliance with established voluntary safety standards. The CPSC has sent a letter to over 2,000 manufacturers and importers, stating that failure to follow UL safety standards may pose a risk to consumers of fire and serious injury or death.
In response to these incidents, the CPSC has called on manufacturers to ensure their products comply with established voluntary safety standards set by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), which is a globally recognized safety certification organization. Manufacturers may show their dedication to delivering trustworthy products by following the applicable consensus safety standards, including ANSI/CAN/UL 2272, ANSI/CAN/UL 2849, and other UL standards, lowering the possibility of fires and severe damage. Furthermore, consumers can make informed decisions by choosing these products, ensuring they ride safely and soundly.
Choosing UL-recognized products not only ensures safety but also gives peace of mind to consumers. Following the established safety standards, individuals can confidently use micro-mobility products without worrying about potential hazards. The CPSC is working towards creating a safer environment for consumers by calling on manufacturers to review their products and comply with the established safety standards.
It's not just the CPSC that recognizes the importance of UL safety standards for micro-mobility products. The use of UL-recognized products is becoming increasingly popular among consumers who are looking for a safe and reliable mode of transportation. By using UL-certified products, consumers can rest assured that their device is designed, manufactured, and tested to meet the highest standards for safety and performance. It is a safer option for commuters because of the UL certification, which also lowers the danger of serious injury from a fire or overheating incident.
The importance of ensuring the safety of consumer products cannot be overstated. The appeal by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on December 19, 2022, highlights the pressing nature of the issue, as an increasing number of individuals are relying on micro-mobility devices for their daily commutes.
