UL Certification
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is a global safety certification organization that sets safety standards for various products, including electric bikes. Addmotor e-bikes and e-trikes prioritize safety and performance. Many of our models are UL 2271 Recognized and UL 2849 Certified in the U.S. and Canada, ensuring they meet rigorous electrical and fire safety standards. Here’s what you should know about UL Certifications related to e-bike safety—to keep you away from fire and electrical hazards and choose the best bike for safe and enjoyable cycling.
Understanding UL Certification
Choosing UL Solutions for our electric bike certification ensures comprehensive safety through rigorous testing of battery and electrical systems. As a globally trusted leader in safety certification, UL builds consumer confidence and helps us comply with regulatory standards. This aligns our brand with a respected authority in safety, demonstrating our commitment to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality electric bikes.
UL 2271 Certification is a safety standard for lithium-ion batteries used in light electric vehicles (LEVs) like electric bikes, e-tricycles, scooters, and golf carts. The safety requirements cover design aspects such as battery pack assembly, cell selection, thermal management, and overcharge protection. This certification ensures the battery's safety and reliability, optimizing the e-bike’s performance for a smooth and dependable riding experience.
UL 2849 Certification is the standard for electrical systems in e-bikes, ensuring fire safety by examining the electrical drive train, battery, and charger system combinations. This certification addresses the risk of electric shock during charging over the product's lifetime, as well as other potential electrocution hazards. The primary goal is to prevent hazards such as electrical fires and shocks, thereby ensuring the safety and reliability of UL certified e-bikes.
- On July 15, 2022, the NBDA (National Bicycle Dealers Association) advises all retailers to encourage their vendors and suppliers to certify their e-bikes or e-bike systems installed on e-bikes to UL 2849.
- On December 20, 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged compliance with UL safety standards for micromobility devices. This includes UL 2272 and UL 2849 certifications.
- To enhance fire safety for e-bikes, e-scooters, and their lithium-ion batteries, the New York City Council passed Initiative 663-A on March 2, 2023. This law, signed by Mayor Eric Adams on March 20, 2023, mandates third-party certification for these devices and battery packs. Here, the third-party certification includes UL Solutions.
